About

Meet Joy

I began my career in the classroom as a 7th grade English teacher and Teach for America corps member in South LA. That experience shaped everything that came after: leading literacy for a middle school, writing an IB curriculum from scratch, grounding policy initiatives in student outcomes, improving teacher preparation programs through participant experience, coaching other teachers through the hardest parts of the job, and eventually studying the whole system closely enough to earn a PhD.

Today, I support aspiring California educators to and through the credentialing process, serve as an adjunct professor of education guiding teacher candidates through their own path into the classroom, and continue to thread the needle for educational equity.

Outside of work, you can find me hanging with my family, training for a triathlon, judging a barbecue competition, playing music, or figuring out where to travel next.
